Broken down on a motorway in Belgium? Here's what to do
A motorway breakdown is one of the most stressful and dangerous situations a driver can face. High speeds, narrow hard shoulders and heavy traffic make it essential to act correctly. Here's exactly what to do.
Step 1: get to the hard shoulder immediately
As soon as you notice a problem, switch on your hazard lights and get to the hard shoulder as quickly as possible. Never stop suddenly on the carriageway.
Step 2: exit via the passenger side
Turn off the engine, apply the handbrake, and exit via the passenger side. Place your warning triangle at least 30 metres behind your vehicle.
Step 3: request help
For emergencies or injuries: call 112. For a breakdown, submit a request via FastAssist24 — include your location (kilometre post or GPS coordinates) and the problem description.
